Designing Transparent Overlays

چکیده

1 Overview Multiple related displays and windows are common in monitoring and business environments where the user is trying to integrate different data views into a coherent information picture. Our particular application is the design of efficient visualizations for the management and operation of high-performance buildings, and our users are the planners and building operators responsible for making decisions about energy and building use in both the short and long term. Good design practice suggests that multiple variables are often best presented in a series of similarly indexed displays – the well-known “small multiples” method [1]. Sometimes, however, this approach is not optimal, especially in monitoring tasks where the allocation of display space may be restricted. For example, building operators need to monitor many aspects of building performance across a continuous time range, and to compare subsets of these ranges. Rather than replicate many data displays (one per range) it would be preferable to support overlays that subdivide the range into meaningful yet overlapping periods. We are exploring the use of transparency to visualize such event and interval overlays.

Exploiting Routing Redundancy via Structured Peer-to-Peer Overlays

Structured peer-to-peer overlays provide a natural infrastructure for resilient routing via efficient fault detection and precomputation of backup paths. These overlays can respond to faults in a few hundred milliseconds by rapidly shifting between alternate routes. In this paper, we present two adaptive mechanisms for structured overlays and illustrate their operation in the context of Tapestr...

Merging ring structured overlay indices: A data-centric approach

Peer-to-Peer index structures distributed and managed over the planet, commonly known as structured overlays (e.g., Distributed Hash Tables) have been touted to play the role of a fundamental building block for internet-scale distributed systems. Traditional designs consider incremental or possibly even parallelized construction of a single overlay, which implicitly assumes global control and c...

Translucent Windows in X

The X Window System allows multiple windows to occupy the same coordinates on the screen. The core protocol defines which portions of each window are visible and which are occluded by overlapping windows, but the overlapping windows are always completely opaque. Various techniques can be used to simulate non-opaque windows in controlled environments. The Shape Extension can be used to make area...

An Investigation on In-situ Strength and Bonding Strength of Polymer Modified Concretes (PMC) as Repair Overlays on Conventional Concrete Substrate

Polymer modified concrete (PMC) consists of Portland cement concrete with a polymer modifier. Its advantages are proper bonding strength to substrate concrete, high tensile and flexural strength and low amount of shrinkage and permeability. Using PMC overlays can be considered as a method for preservation of damaged concrete structures due to their suitable performance and durability. In this r...
